London Lockdown

What Aussies & Kiwis in London are saying

While London, like much of the world is locked down, the team at Global are speaking with our community of Australians and Kiwis in London each day.

To provide an insight into how Kiwis and Aussies in London are getting on, we are sharing feedback we receive. From those that have chosen to stay put, to the ones that opted to return home for now. There seems to be a strong sense of resilience with those affected.

For the latest information on the UK job market, including whether people are keeping their jobs, if contracts are being extended or ended, how many people are heading home and more, check out the list below.

From Aussies & Kiwis in London

This list was last updated on April 16, 2020.

I secured a 12-month FTC which started in February and a week ago the contract was terminated. The company still wants me to come back and work after the effects of Covid 19 have passed, so I have qualified for govt assistance, receiving £2,500 per month

31st March

I’m unsure how long to wait it out, or to see if there are other opportunities available because I don’t want to waste my visa

31st March

My contract was extended and I’m allowed to continue to working through my Limited Company. Working from home, other than that it’s business as usual

1st April

I’ve secured a contract extension through to the end of May and continuing to work through my limited company. I’m actively looking for another role, preferably permanent as I have an EU passport. Had 3 interviews last week but they have been put on hold. Considering heading back home but thinks I’ll wait another 3-4 months to see if I can get more work

1st April

My employer has had a meeting discussing furlough with employees, but I feel safe in my role so far. Not going back home as my husband is based in UK

1st April

My contract has been terminated early and I don’t qualify for govt assistance. Have been contacting lots of recruitment agencies and had an interview yesterday. Not going to come home as I figure there will be more opportunities in London than in Australia

1st April

I’ve been let go from my job. Currently looking for work and will give it till early June to make the decision whether to say or go home. Dad thinks I should stay, mum thinks I should come home

1st April

I am working from home as is my husband, Its business as usual. Working from home is fine it does have its challenges as things don’t seem to happen as efficiently as it would if you were all in the office and able to communicate directly with colleagues, rather than wait for a response via email

1st April

I have taken a permanent role at a reduced salary for the next 3 months, which is what everyone in the company has done” There are job losses but I feel pretty secure with my role. A few friends have returned home but these people either had their visa soon to expire or in industries like construction

1st April

My 4-month contract ended in March and wasn’t renewed. I’m actively looking for work and also wondering if I can suspend my limited company for the time being when I’m not working to avoid the fees?

2nd April

My contract has been extended till mid-April but I’m not sure if it will be extended again due to major cut backs in the company. So, I have started my job search, but I’m going to stay in London because I reckon I have better chances getting a job here than back home

2nd April

I managed to sign a new contract days before Covid-19 changed the market. I’m secure till June and likely to be extended further, still working through my limited company. Feeling really lucky

2nd April

My contract will finish mid-May and I don’t think it’ll be extended so I’m looking for other roles now. I’m curious what the job market is like back in NZ and if Furlough applies to contractors

2nd April

I started a new role in January and just had my contract ended early, I’m going to stick it out in London and look for another role

2nd April

2nd April

I got my contract extended till the end of my visa, which is a nice feeling. I’m now used to working from home too!

2nd April

Still working through my limited company on a contract extension

2nd April

I am isolating with friends at a family property & using UTube workouts to keep active Meeting with recruiters in London was ok but for niche areas like mine I think it’s better to do your own research & apply directly to roles. We are looking to return to UK when market picks up & once it is safe health wise We are hoping the landlord is understanding re our London lease

3rd April

I’m still planning on heading over early May. I had an initial interview with one of the recruiters Global introduced me to. He is confident there will be contracting opportunities available when I arrive. I think it helps that I am open to all industries & roles. I just need to keep him updated around my flights. At this stage the airline hasn’t been in touch to say flights are cancelled.

3rd April

I am working from home which is something I have done before so just business as usual. Probably the most challenging part of it, is being an in 1bdrm with my girlfriend 24/7😊. I was in contract negotiations to go permanent just as this hit so I am currently on 2 week rolling contract until everything settles down

4th April

My husband and I did think about going back to Australia to be closer with family however given we both still have our jobs here we decided to stay and ride it out

6th April

My contract extension just needed the last sign off from the CEO and then Covid hit and I lost the extension. Looking for work and will stay in London for another couple of months before I reassess.
